Being outside the US or UK can make autograph collecting a little more difficult. Here are a few tips I have picked up along the way:
1. Always include an SASE (Self-addessed stamped envelope) or at least 2 IRC's (International Reply Coupons). Sending only a letter will limit the amount of successes you receive, and you'll be wasting a lot of money on postage.
2. Always be extremely sincere with your letters, explain why you are a fan, what movies/songs, etc you loved.
3. If you can't handwrite your letter (like me having arthritis), then at least sign your name at the end by hand on your typed letter.
4. If you would like a specific picture signed, then print it out (or purchase it), and send it in a larger envelope - and always remember to add cardboard for protection.
5. Never forget your AIRMAIL sticker!
6. Never forget to write PHOTO DO NOT BEND all over the return envelope! And if your country's official language is not English, have it written in both languages, so that the people in your country won't bend it either.
7. Expect to wait from 1-10 months to receive a response. Dependant on the celebrity's popularity, as well as the postal services on both sides.
8. If you send an email to a celebrity, remember to include your postal information EXACTLY how it would be written on an envelope.
9. If they ask for an SASE when you email, don't be disappointed, and respect their wishes. Understand that paying for the photographs, envelopes and postage becomes too expensive when everybody and their cousin asks for an autograph.
10. Most of all - enjoy what you are doing. Be happy with every success you get no matter the size of the picture/autograph, or whether it is inscribed or not. Celebrities are very busy people, especially when they become more popular, so be thankful for any success you may get!
