I took a long break from autograph collecting. It wasn't that I didn't enjoy it anymore, but the job I had didn't really give me the free time I needed. Now that I'm back in school full time and not working as much, I've decided to get back into the swing of things. I had a lot of photos that I had printed but never mailed so my first task was to get those sent out. I'm happy to say that on March 13th I sent all but a few of my photos out. The ones I didn't send were ones that I am waiting for better addresses.
I also had a bunch of envelopes that I had addressed, but never had written letters. Sooo... my next project is to send out all of those requests.
So far this month I have sent out 35 requests. In all of 2008 I only mailed out 58, most of those were in January. Only 20 of my 2008 requests have been successful.
I'm trying to go at it a little differently this year. Last year was all about the challenge. I had gotten a little bored so I wanted to try to get some of the harder celebs. This year I want to find a happy balance... and I think cleaning up my supplies is a great start! It's making me very motivated.

Sounds great Meagan.. I also had a pretty slow year last year - also work related.
Yeah, I also enjoy the challenge of sending to difficult celebrities, and also I'm always the one sending to addresses that have no results posted yet - I don't know why, but I enjoy it. 9 times out of 10 it's RTS though. LOL. Now I'm trying to send to some successful addresses, but I'm still trying out the unused addresses though, because those JUST MIGHT be the right ones for those hard to obtain celebs. Good luck with those pics you sent out! I'm still trying to get you a good address for Ryan.

Well, you rocked it on the Wayne Wilderson address with no replies because I got his autograph back in about 11 days.
Good luck to you also!

I got really frustrated too. In late 2007 I had emailed a bunch of agencies and such of certain celebs asking if I could get an autograph if I mailed in my letter and SASE. Many of them agreed so I mailed my letters & SASEs out to all of them that did and I didn't get a single reply from ANY of those people. It's been over a year now and the hope is gone.
I thought at least those would be sure bets, but they weren't. I'm not giving up though... just getting organized.
You wouldn't believe all of the envelopes I had already addressed out to celebrities but never mailed. I still have 11 left and I've already sent several of them out.
Thanks for keeping an eye out for a good address for Ryan. It is a must have for me.

I know exactly what you mean Meagan. I had called a bunch of places last year asking if I could send them photos for the certain celeb to sign. They all said YES, and I think I got ONE back out of the how many I called. So it really does suck. We call or email to make sure that they accept the fan mail...before we waste our time and money sending it, and then we never get a response. I wonder how that works. I even verified the addresses with the people.

I know... maybe they pass it on, but the celebs just don't want to sign?
Whatever it is, it's frustrating. I wasted a lot of money. And you sent photos? So that's even more money. I just sent a letter and a SASE to each.

Yeah, I send photos probably 90% of the time. And I figure its better and easier for them...cause all they have to do is take out the photos, sign them, and put them back in the SASE, mail it and they're done. But I guess they don't see it that way. It can sometimes be easier when you send a letter with an SASE, because if they have presigned photos, then they can just send those. But they don't even do that a lot of the time. I have 306 unanswered requests still from last year.

I like to send photos too. And many of the harder to get celebs will only respond if you send a photo.
It just got to be too expensive to print photos when I wasn't seeing the results. According to my spreadsheets of letters I've sent over the years I have at least 180 requests still lingering out there. Only 45 of those are from this year (which were all sent this month).
I guess all 3 of us know how difficult it can be to find a balance of being adventurous to challenege ourselves, but also needing to see mail coming in. I do have to say that it's the ones that are harder to get that mean the most. And I also like to try addresses with no results... when it seems like I might have a shot.
----------------
Also in my efforts to get organized I purchased a new binder to hold my photos. My collection outgrew my old one. I have updated the "Sent To" and "New This Month" sections, but I need to update my albums with all of my scans and I'm missing quite a few scans. The update will keep me busy for a while.

I know what you mean. With ink, photo paper, and everything, it can be expensive to send out photos. But it is required for some celebs. And I also like to send two, if they only sign one, thats fine, but if they sign both, thats even better. I like having two different pics of the celeb. I have sent to some new addresses that have never been used and some really old ones, and I have been successful with those. But I have also gotten a ton of RTSs for the really old ones. I am already on my third 3 inch binder of autographs. Its surprising how fast they fill up! But I just go from A-Z in each binder for all autographs I get in...I don't categorize them. |

Mine are organized A-Z in a two inch binder and I also have a 1" binder for my 5x7's that's sorted A-Z as well.
You must have quite the collection! That's awesome.

Yeah, I haven't counted at all...I have some in frames, but not that many. And the only ones I put in the binders are my 8.5x11s and 8x10s. I would have an even better collection if everyone would respond. LOL!

Hmmm... My problem with sending my own photo's is not so much the expense of printing (which is a lot too), but mainly the fact that in my country we pay according to size of envelope not weight of envelope. And it costs a LOT to post a 9x12 envelope from South Africa to another country. *sigh*
