That’s just a way a photographer can protect his/her work …

Other words if you are making copies of their work and then resell it on eBay (like I am sure others are doing) you might have a lawyer or even the FBI knocking at your door one day …

Basically if you start profiting of them you might have an issue … But not with the celebrity the photographer.

BUT, if you buy the photographer’s picture that copy is now your property and you can sell that single picture you paid for … If that were illegal them I think the FBI would be arresting people at garage sales and flea markets throughout the USA.

And as far as studio publicity stills they send those out to the media so the media can review and promote there works … I see press kits for sale all the time. I believe its 100% ok to get them signed from celebrities and even some day sell if you wish … Just do not make copies and sell them in any way you should be ok.

Simply depends on the celebrities commitment to their fans and their work schedule … Some celebrities (usually the working ones) can afford to have a staff to read their mail and stuff envelopes for them … The retired celebrities usually don’t or simply can’t afford to have a staff to work for them … The Jay Leno’s and the David Letterman’s who have the staff and NEED their ratings have people to help them get those autographs out there quick … All depends on many factors … Some celebrities simply don’t sign like Paul McCartney, while others have signed but decided to go into retirement like Ringo Starr (stopped signing in October 2009) …

Some celebrities will gladly sign an extra autograph … Just put in your letter it’s for your sister or something.

Some will only sign there promo pics, because they are too busy to sign your pics … Another words they sign hundreds - thousands of pictures when they have time and there assistants stuff the envelopes for them when their fans write. Some celebrities that are currently working on projects movies / TV shows so most do not even read there fan mail.

There are also reports that some celebrities will keep track of who writes them so they can weed out the fans from the autograph dealers … And moist importantly the stalkers.

Basically to answer your question … It simply depends on the celebrity; I wrote Peter Tork (the Monkees) about 3-4 times and each time he was nice enough to honor my requests.  I wrote Leonard Nimoy (Star Trek) and send him a picture to sign and I got back another picture he signed previously.

… Just all depends on the entertainer / celebrity.
